Unboxing June’s Pip Box: Sustainable Beauty

june pip box

Making planet-friendly, vegan and cruelty-free purchases isn’t always easy. The beauty industry is famous for its use of jargon, misleading promises and a surprising level of ‘greenwashing’. Our June monthly box highlights 5 vegan, cruelty-free and planet-conscious brands, keep reading to find out who they are and what they’re doing…

With “natural” and “green” beauty brands popping up everywhere in high street stores it is more difficult than ever to tell who really cares and who’s just jumping on the natural beauty bandwagon. “Green-washing”, a phrase that is becoming more and more common, refers to products that makes claims to be natural, eco-friendly, organic or environmentally conscious – when they aren’t any of those things – as a sales tactic.

In other words, anyone could throw the word eco-friendly on their packaging and call it a day, making sustainable shopping more confusing than ever.

The Pip Box is a vegan beauty subscription box unlike other monthly makeup boxes in the UK we focus on the quality of the brands and the products we feature. Our June subscription box focuses on 5 cruelty-free brands who are taking the green beauty world by storm.

The box is worth £59 and contains 5 sustainable beauty products…

Lucky Cloud Hydrating Super Balm RRP £17

Lucky Cloud is a multi-award winning, natural, vegan friendly, plastic free skincare brand founded by Lucy Cardwell. Her botanical skincare brand was launched in Scotland in 2015 after Lucy found it increasingly more difficult to find expert skincare she could trust.

Focusing on natural products for the treatments of dry, damaged and sensitive skin Lucky Cloud harnesses the natural power of ethically sourced ingredients in all their products. Founder Lucy has firsthand experience with sensitive and painful eczema prone skin and after years of wasting money on mass produced products she decided to make a change, and Lucky Cloud was born.

6 years later Lucky Cloud have won multiple awards, gained hundreds of 5* customer reviews and continue to develop their brand offering customers personalised skincare advice from their Skin Quiz. As well as containing natural ingredients Lucky Cloud is almost 100% plastic-free!

Softening Apricot Kernel Oil, with rich shea & cocoa butters moisturise and protect your skin to repair flaky, cracked skin and strengthen your skin barrier to keep it healthier for longer. Both the amber glass container and aluminum lid are 100% recyclable and the outer label is biodegradable.

The thick, creamy consistency of this balm is perfect for applying to any rough patch of skin, locking in moisture to repair and reveal fresh, glowing skin.

Codex Beauty Labs Bia Skin Superfood RRP £14

Codex Beauty Labs is a biotech company grounded in science, dedicated to supporting the microbiome, and pioneering products having clinically proven, meaningful skincare benefits. Their mission is to blend the sciences of ethnobotany and plant biology with biotech innovation, to create a new standard within the natural space: plant-based biotech beauty.

Dr. Barbara Paldus, the founder of Codex Beauty Labs, highlighted a need to deliver high-efficacy skincare collections that defy the mainstream with science based effective ingredients. From top to bottom, she’s created a line that puts the plant-power back in your hands—with the results to back it up.

Their five-layer tubes are made from green polyethylene, a sustainable plastic alternative with ethanol extracted from Brazilian sugarcane agricultural waste —a renewable raw material. Not only is this material recyclable and plant-based, but also the use of plant material rather than fossil fuels positively impacts the environment. It captures and fixes the carbon dioxide from the atmosphere during its production process, helping to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases.

The Bia Skin Superfood inside your June Pip Box is a treatment cream for daily use on face, hands and body that hydrates, smooths, softens and soothes.

The Vintage Cosmetics Co. Makeup Cloths RRP £9.99

The Vintage Cosmetics Co. started with a humble offering of false eyelashes and has now expanded to offer every tool and beauty accessory trending right now. A premium brand at an affordable price they hope to give women the opportunity to express their individuality with the power of makeup and relaxing skincare.

According to research group Mintel, 43% of women in the UK regularly use face wipes, which take years to breakdown in landfills due to their composition of virtually indestructible materials. To waste less and help save the environment from throwaway products, beauty brands have been creating new, eco-friendly products that won’t add to landfills.

The reusable makeup remover cloths from The Vintage Cosmetics Co. are a sustainable and easy way to remove make up. The specially formulated polyester removes makeup with just water leaving your face fresh and clean. Simply pop in the washing machine at 30 degrees and leave to dry naturally before using it all over again. The outer packaging for your cloths is 100% recyclable.

Beauty by ZERO Eye Cream RRP £9.99

Inspired by our desire for sustainable skincare Skin Academy and their Head of Product Development Holly Wagman launched ZERO, an all-natural, planet-friendly skincare brand.

Suffering from ultra-sensitive skin and eczema in her teenage years, Holly became acutely aware that she had to be very selective with the products she used on her skin, especially her face and around her eyes. ZERO uses completely natural ingredients, thoughtfully packaged to minimise waste and keep our environmental footprint as light as possible.

The naturally scented, rich eye cream featuring in June’s Pip Box is enriched with Shea Butter, renowned for its healing properties, and deeply moisturising Coconut Oil. These all-natural ingredients help to hydrate and nourish the delicate skin around your eyes. The cosmetic tube is made from sugarcane ethanol and they use 15% recycled cardboard packaging which is 100% recyclable.

SKNFED Peppermint Foot Balm RRP £7.99

SKNFED’s founder, Marzena Mlynarska, desire to create truly natural skin care first began while searching the high-street for natural products. Marzena was searching for products that would be gentle on the skin and at the same time effective. After months of searching she found that many so-called “natural” skin care brands in fact used almost entirely synthetic ingredients.

Her company Go Do Natural then launched its first brand SKNFED. With humble beginnings in just a small range of soaps and creams SKNFED now sells dozens of natural, botanical based products including body oils, hand cream, body butters, exfoliators and more.

Both SKNFED’s packaging and products are all biodegradable and/ or recyclable. The Organic Peppermint Foot Balm inside June’s Pip Box is a cooling and refreshing formula that will bring relief to your tired feet. High level of Omega-3 fatty acids due to flaxseed oil will prevent dryness. Beneficial properties of Shea Butter and Vitamin E will leave your skin soft and nourished.
